Using Competencies to Manage Training

This section provides an overview of competencies and training and discusses how to manage competencies with training.

By assigning competencies to training, you can better match employees to appropriate training options. You can also automatically schedule the courses. And when a course is completed, the system automatically updates the employee’s competency profile. You can assign competencies to courses and to other forms of training, such as computer-based programs.

The functionality to manage competencies and training is split between the Manage Competencies and Administer Training business processes. The following table lists Administer Training pages.

Course Table

Set Up HRMS, Product Related, Enterprise Learning, Courses

Assign competencies when you create courses. Define course information.

Identify course prerequisites.

Target competencies.

Specify standard equipment and materials required to administer courses.

After you set up the courses and assign competencies, you can set up training programs and search for courses based on competency.

Training Program Table

Set Up HRMS, Product Related, Enterprise Learning, Program Information, Training Program Table

Group courses into logical progressions.

Associate the training programs with job codes on the Job Code Table page or with projects within the Manage Competencies business process.

Training History

Enterprise Learning, Training Reports, Student Training History

Track the training employees have taken or plan to take. This includes both in-house course sessions and external courses for employees.

Note. To view a list and descriptions of standard courses already defined in the system, generate the Course Table report (PER703).

Set Up HRMS, Product Related, Enterprise Learning, Non-Course Training, Non Course Table Competencies

Track training that does not involve taking a course or attending a class, such as CD-ROM presentations or self-paced training guides.

Competency Training

COMP_TRAINING

  • Workforce Development, Competency Management, Perform Competency Search, Review Competency Training

  • Click Competency Training on the Person to Role Match − Competency Match page.

Search for training courses that address a selected competency.

Access the Non Course Table Competencies page.

Media Type

Select a media type (such as CD-ROM). These values are stored on the Translate Table page; you can edit them or add more values.

Competency

Add competencies that are developed through this training method. (The competency definitions are accessible through the Competency Table page.)

Access the Competency Training page.

The system displays courses that are designated for the competency that you select.

(Enroll Into Course Session)

Displays the Enroll into Course Session button only when you access this page from the Person to Role Match page. Click to add the selected employee to the waiting list for the course session.

If the employee is already enrolled or waitlisted in the session, a message is displayed.

If the employee is already enrolled or waitlisted in another session of the same course, then the system displays a message and bypasses the waitlist request.
