This chapter provides an overview of ChartField summarization with trees and discusses how to create and maintain trees.
Use tree diagrams to organize and maintain the ChartFields. Trees add an intuitive, visual layer, where you can see how detail items in the chart of accounts fit into the big picture. Design tree structures, either detail or summary, from the top down by using the graphical PeopleTools Tree Manager. Next, add ChartField values as leaves to the branches of the tree. In the following example of a balance sheet detail tree structure, The BALSHEET tree node and level is a detail of the ALLACCOUNTS tree node and level, and the (000000) - All Accounts is a detail value reporting to the BALSHEET tree node and level. If you click the ASSETS -Asset Accounts, a range of detail asset accounts appears. This approach ensures definitive hierarchies for all the accounts, programs, and anything in the chart of accounts. To create financial reports or generate rules for summary ledgers, you specify the appropriate tree and indicate the level or branch from which you want to extract data.
Example: Balances Sheet Detail Tree Structure
You can also copy a tree to create another tree and maintain data in the existing trees. For example, you can modify ChartFields in PeopleSoft Tree Manager and the rest of the system automatically uses the updated tree.
